Auckland's grand old lady of theatre and musicals is back. Auckland Live is rolling out the red carpet for the return of The Civic Tours, the much-loved walking tours of the iconic landmark that Aucklanders and visitors can't get enough of.

Auckland Live's bespoke one-hour tours of The Civic are here for summer! Journey with us through this iconic landmark on a tour packed full of anecdotes, facts and stories from behind the scenes. Experience the building while the curtain is down and get exclusive access to some of its most admired spaces.

Our knowledgeable tour guide shares this atmospheric theatre's fascinating history, from its inception and design in the 1920s, its scandalous war years, its decline during the 60s and 70s, and its triumphant restoration and status as one of Auckland's architectural treasures.

This is an exciting opportunity to see The Civic like never before, visit areas off-limits to the public, capture unique photographs and discover all the secrets that bring this amazing venue to life.

At the end of the tour, enjoy a complimentary barista made coffee, cup of tea or juice or soft drink at The Civic's Stark's Café and Bar where you can relax and soak up the atmosphere.

Please note: we stage lots of live performances throughout the year so tour routes may vary when a show is in season.

A good level of mobility required

On The Civic Tour you will climb around 300 steps as you move throughout foyers and spaces. While there are railings and a number of rests throughout the tour when the guide shares our stories, you will not have the opportunity to sit for any long period of time during the tour.

Arrival Time

Please meet in the front foyer of The Civic - 15 minutes prior to the tour e.g. if the tour starts 10am, please arrive at 9.45 am.

Additional Information

Due to the limited capacity of 16 people per tour, all patrons must have a ticket. This small group size means you have plenty of time ask questions to your guide, take photographs and get the best views.

Recommended age 14+, children under 3 not admitted.
