The first Shazam! movie in 2019 was a big hit that was widely liked. There won't be the same embrace greeting Fury of the Gods, a messy and lethargic sequel that offers compelling evidence that the original used up all the good stuff the Shazam! premise could possibly have offered.

That premise - in case you have forgotten - centres on a politely spoken teenage boy named Billy (Asher Angel) who has the ability to morph into a politely irreverent adult superhero called Shazam (Zachary Levi).

This time around, Billy and his besties (who now also have superhero alter egos) are on a mildly calamitous collision course with some angry ancient goddesses (led by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu). With the fate of the world at stake should some magical doo-dad fall into the wrong hands, the movie chirpily jogs along with noticeably little urgency, or any sustained effort made to get an audience caring.

It all ends with one of those big, swirly CG-effects-drenched mega-battles that give your eyes a burny, watering sensation, and your brain a dull aching throb.
